The coin tester (21) exhibits for each acceptable type of coin an electric contact (m1...m3) which switches on an associated pulse generator (V1...V3). The latter supplies a number of pulses proportional to the value of the relevant coin for driving at least one stepping switch (St1...St3). After different numbers of predetermined switching steps, contacts (st1...st3) close the exciter circuits of three relays (A, B, C). The first relay (A) is used for controlling the automatic machine for performing an individual service when an amount of coins to the amount of the single price X of an individual service of the automatic machine has been inserted. The third relay (C) is used for controlling the automatic machine for performing a plurality n of individual services when an amount of coins to the amount of a quantity price Y for this plurality n of individual services has been inserted, the quantity price Y being lower than the sum of the individual prices X for the same number n of individual services. The second relay (B) interrupts the circuit for starting the automatic machine when the inserted amount of coins is between the individual price X and the quantity price Y. The apparatus is suitable, for example, for controlling an automatic machine for producing photocopies or image duplicates. <IMAGE>
