The bearing is for a spindle rotating in a fixed housing and accurately guiding components e.g. in machine tools. Movement detectors measure the spindle inclination near the mounting end and their signals modified in a control unit adjust a bearing. The bearing (4) furthest from the mounting end is accommodated in a nonrotating auxiliary bearing (15) which moves it radially so as to counteract any inclination of the spindle (1) under load. The auxiliary bearing can be of the magnetic or hydrostatic type.
