The garden umbrella has a multi-panelled cover supported in the centre by a crown (7) at the top of the shaft (1) and at the corners by main ribs (3). Bending rods (6) are mounted along the seams of adjoining panels (9) and are attached for swivel movement to the crown (7) to take up at least part of the tensile stresses which arise when the umbrella cover is braced. The bending rods are connected for longitudinal displacement to the associated main ribs (3) or tension rib (5).
