Foam coated primary backing material

A carpet primary backing material has a sheet of material coated on its underside with a foam composition to a thickness of between 20 and 35 mils (0.51 and 0.89 mm) and a weight of 3 to 7 ounces per square yard (0.102 to 0.237 kg/m<2>). A tufted carpet may be formed by tufting a carpet yarn into the foam and the material to form loops on the upper surface of the backing and loop backs on the layer of foam. The backing is particularly suitable for forming indoor-outdoor carpets having an appearance similar to grass. The invention avoids the need to coat the backing, after tufting, with latex material which requires oven drying.
