<p>1369655 Making stainless steel ARMCO STEEL CORP 4 Nov 1971 [9 Nov 1970] 51365/71 Heading C7D A steel comprising 5-30% Cr and 0-25% Ni, is made by a) smelting a charge consisting mainly of Fe ore and Cr ore in a submerged arc furnace to give a product comprising 5-30% Cr, at least 2% C and up to 2% Si, the balance, apart from impurities, being Fe, b) refining the product in a second vessel by directing a stream of oxygen against the melt for long enough to reduce the C content to less than 0À2% and c) finishing the refining by injecting a mixture of O 2 and one of Ar, Ne, Kr, Xe, He and N 2 below the surface of the melt, the Ni content being added during the above process.</p> |
