A tablet of alumina powder is heated at a rate of 400 to 1000 DEG C/min at a pressure of 70 kg/cm<2> up to 800 DEG C, at which temperature beginning of shrinkage takes place, and the rise in temperature is continued so as to reach 1600 DEG C over a period of 8 min at a pressure of 250 kg/cm<2>, and this temperature is maintained for 3 min, after which the shrinkage ceases, reflecting the completion of the sintering. The process applies to the manufacture of sintered bodies made of alumina, pure or mixed with titanium carbide, and of uranium oxide.
