The gases from the process (CO2, CO, F, compds.) which flow through a hole in the crust covering the molten mix., were mixed with air to burn the CO, and removed through the hood. The hole in the crust was maintained by periodically dipping a mech. operated steel rod. The air was introduced by several procedures into the space between the lower end of the hood and the hole.
