PURPOSE:The catalytic hydrogenation of 4-tert-butylphenol under pressure is conducted using a ruthenium catalyst prepared by the adsorption of a ruthenium salt on alumina in a strong alkali aqueous solution to produce economically high-quality title compound used for perfumery of cosmetics. CONSTITUTION:Alumina is suspended in an alkali metal hydroxide as sodium hydroxide aqueous solution and a ruthenium salt, preferably ruthenium cloride, solution is added to above suspension to deposit the ruthenium salt on the alumina as ruthenium hydroxide. Then the ruthenium hydroxide is reduced with sodium borohydride and treated with hydrochloric acid to prepare ruthenium catalyst on alumina. The catalytic hydrogenation of 4-tert-burylphenol is effected using the resulting catalyst at 55-150 deg.C to produce cis-4-tert-butyl-cyclohexanol.
