The cigarette handling system using belt conveyors so as to form a reservoir between machines, as in the main patent, has an intermediate conveyor (152) forming part of a reservoir system with a belt (161) which can be driven in either direction. This is located on the opposite side of a vertical conveyor (146) to an incoming feed conveyor (51) formed by two horizontal belt conveyors (114, 116). The zone between (V22) forms a distributor zone. The main reservoir (V23) has a bottom formed by a horizontal belt conveyor (154) with a curved partition (156a) located along it, forming an end wall, with an extension (156) which slopes upwards away from it. The gap (181) between the vertical channel and the intermediate converyor has its top edge below the top of the stack of cigarettes on the horizontal conveyor (51).
