The expanding dowel for use in bone surgery has a tube (1) with slote (2) at the end, preceded by a partition (3) across the inside. A screw passes through the partition, with the head on the inside, to fit into a pear shaped insert, so that as the screw is tightened, the insert is drawn into the openend, spreading the fingers formed between the slots. At the other end, the tube is threaded internally (6) and a flanged sleeve (8) fits over it. The end of the tube has a peg (10) projecting from it, which slides in a slot (9) along the sleeve. A screw fits inside the threaded end, to draw the sleeve down over the tube. The flange on the sleeve carries spikes (11) which project towards the tube.
