Pollutant particles such as lead particles are separated from engine exhaust gases by passing the gases through a restricted flow passage (4) to increase their speed, reversing the gas flow by impingement on a first curved baffle (5) having apertures (8) backed by a chamber (11) containing a particle-conglomerating packing (13), then reversing the gas flow again by a second curved and apertured baffle (6) backed by a similar packing (12) before the gases discharge to exhaust through an outlet (14). The packings, 12, 13 are of expanded metal or wire mesh. A third baffle 7 restricts the gas flow between the first and second baffles. Aperture 20 allows air to flow into chamber 11 so encouraging circulation of exhaust gases in the chamber. <IMAGE> |
