<p>A cryostatic temperature control system enables the cooling of an object to a selected temperature within a wide range, and maintaining that temperature, without excessive evaporation of liquefied gas coolant from the open cryostat. An inner, open container 4 contains a liquefied gas 8 and receives the object and is contained in an outer container 1 which contains liquefied gas 7 at a lower temperature than gas 8. A space 6 in double-walled inner container 4 contains a heat exchange medium 9 and the liquefied gas 7 cools the liquefied gas 8 to a desired temperature lower than its boiling point (thus minimising its evaporation). The amount of heat exchange medium within space 6 may be regulated and/or a heater may be provided in this space or at 14 to control the temperature. A stirrer 13 ensures uniform heat distribution. <IMAGE></p> |
