PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound, useful as a solvent, a starting material of polyesters etc., economically, by the reaction of an olefin with a carboxylic acid in the presence of an iodine-containing catalyst, characterized in that said catalyst is specifically treated prior to the distillation of the reaction mixture and recycled to the reaction system without loss. CONSTITUTION:A carboxylic acid of formula R<5> -CO2H (R<5> is alkyl, aryl) is made to react with an olefin of formual I (R<1-4> are H, alkyl, aryl) and molecular oxygen in the presence of a solution of catalyst comprising an iodine-containing substacne, nitrogen oxide, and sulfuric acid, in a reaction vessel at 20-150 deg.C in an aqueous phase. The reaction mixture obtained is treated with O2 -containing gas in an oxygen heat-treating vessel at 140-200 deg.C to convert the iodine-containing substance to a high b.p. compound, and then distilled in a distillation column in order to recycle the iodine-containing high b.p. residue to the reaction vessel. The low b.p. residue is taken out of the top of the distillation column and again purified by distillation to afford an alkylene glycol ester of formula II and/or formula III. |
