Citric acid, useful as food, cosmetics or pharmaceuticals, was manufd. (isolated in 56% yield as tri-Me ester) by epoxidn. of itaconic acid with H2O2 in the presence of Na tungstate in aq. NaOH and treatment of the resulting di - Na epoxyitaconate with NaCN in the presence of aq. MgSO4, followed by hydrolysis.
