The electromagnetic stirrer has magnetic teeth (3) which extend in the direction of a cast strand (1) from a central part (2) containing the coils. A narrow air gap is formed between the magnetic teeth (3) and the cast strand (1). The magnetic teeth (3) are replaceable in order to allow them to be replaced easily in the event of damage due to a break-out from the cast strand (1). The magnetic teeth (3) can furthermore be replaced in order to effect adaptation to different dimensions of cast strand (1) without the need to replace the stirrers themselves. It is also possible to arrange the magnetic teeth (3) at an acute angle in the direction of the cast strand (1) in order to concentrate the magnetic field on a particular part of the cast strand (1). Arranged between the magnetic teeth (3) are spray nozzles (4) which spray water, for example, to cool the magnetic stirrer. In addition to its capacity for adaptation, such a stirrer has a greater stirring capacity than known stirrers. <IMAGE>
