The device for assessing the vertical position of automatic couplings is esp. for centre buffer couplings. A frame grips the coupling unit on one side and a base piece fitting against a reference point on the coupling head. At the end facing away from the base piece (8) the frame is fitted with a wedge (5) engaging between a rounded surface (18) on the coupling hinge (14) and a bearing surface (19) on the vehicle. A horizontal arm (2) on the frame has a spirit-level (13) attached to it.
