A test press for tubular section rings expanding between two planes has a filler plate reducing the volume of the chamber. It dispenses with initial ring compression as the uncertainty of initial ring strain causes measurement inaccuracies. The filter plate is a distance piece (5) slightly thicker than the height of the ring (2) with seals (6) on both edges. Stress is applied by two wedges (11, 14) with dia. corresp. to that of the largest of various ring sizes to be tested. The lower wedge (14) is driven by a hydraulic cylinder (17).
