<p>The weld is made by applying axial pressure to the butt joint between two workpieces, to create plastic flow and bonding. One piece is pref. a drawn rod made of 99.5% Al, the other piece is a head formed by casting, drawing or welding, and made of 99.5% electrolytic copper. At least one of the pieces is pref. hardened in the region of its joint surface, esp. by exposure to a steel-wire brush. The welding pressure is pref. applied in a series of steps producing a bulge at the joint, the bulge increasing in size after each step. The back end of the piece with higher porosity is pref. supported by a thrust surface during welding. A pore-free butt welding resistant to corrosion is obtd. between the pieces.</p> |
