The heavy duty belt conveyor with a belt drive one end and belt tensioning system at the other end, has the belt (23) supported by idler rollers (30). The belt tensioning system has a carriage (60) carrying the return drum (62), pulled along rails by a counterweight system. The idler rollers are supported between the sides of reinforced concrete frames (32), suspended on cross cables. At intermediate positions between the frames, the upper idler rollers (30) can be suspended from cross cables which hook over longitudinal cables (35) supported from the tops of the frames. At the drive end, where the belt slopes downwards, the coiler rollers can be supported between reinforced concrete slabs (53) which slope downwards each side of the belt.
