Road vehicle anti-collision system - uses lamp at front of vehicle performing azimuthal scan of reflectors on rear of preceding vehicle

The system reduces the danger of collision to a road vehicle caused by obstructions in its path. A reflection measuring unit on the vehicle has an emitter for a focussed light beam, and a receiver for the reflected beam. The beam performs several azimuthal deflections periodically inside a predetermined area in front of the vehicle. The vehicles have reflectors (6) at the rear, reflecting the beams striking them at differing strengths, typically in the form of vertical strips at intervals on the vehicle rear. A characteristic signal is formed by these reflections.
