The hand operated labelling machine has a printing head fixed to the body. A platen for carrying a ribbon of labels is supported in the body and situated such that a label on the platen faces the printing head. The platen, carrying a ribbon of labels is displaced rapidly against the printing head by operation of a hand lever connected to the platen via an actuator. A mechanism is provided for retracting the actuator, and withdrawing the platen after printing. The retraction device is disconnected from the actuator before the platen is withdrawn.
