Indolenine intermediate (I; R = H, Me, Cl, Ho, MeO, NO2, R1, R2, R3 = Me, alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl) was prepd. by the acid - catalyzed condensation of excess RC6H4NH with R1COCR2R3 OH in benzene or xylene with azeotropic removal of H2O to give an imine intermediate which was cyclized by dehydration in the same vessel with azeotropic removal of H2O beat yields (>60%) were obtained in the presence of a ZnCl2 catalyst.
