Mol. wt. distribution control was improved in low-pressure polymn. of ethylene using BuOH- or EtOH-Mg - I-Ti (OBu)4-(iso-Bu)3Al or - EtAlCl2 catalyst system by addn. of ZrCl4, VCl4, VCl3, VOCl3, or MoCl3 to the catalyst system. Thus, polyethylene prepd. from ethylene in the presence of a BuOH-Mg-I-Ti(OBu)4 - (iso-Bu)3Al-ZrCl catalyst system under total pressure 20 atm. had high-load melt index/melt index value 121.
