<p>NEW MATERIAL:A corbostyryl derivative of formula I: (R is methyl or halogen; X is O or S; however, R is not methyl, Cl, and F when X is O). EXAMPLE:A compound of formula II. USE:Fungicides for rice plants, which have a rapid action and aftereffect for a long duration on blast and sclerotinia rot, can be applied to leaf and water surfaces, and soil, facilitate agricultural work, have a low toxicity to warm-blooded animals and fishes, scarcely remain in crops, and will not cause environmental pollution. Chracterized by substituents both at the 1- and 8- positons of the carbostyryl. PROCESS:A quinoline derivative of formula III is reacted with a methylating agent, e.g. a methyl halide, at 0-100 deg.C for 0.5-10 hr to give a quaternary salt, which is then oxidized by sodium ferricyanide in the presence of a base, g.g. NaOH or KOH in a solvent, e.g. water or ethanol, to give the compound of formula I.</p> |
