Synergistic catalyst compsns. for catalysing esterification reactions between carboxylic acids and vic-epoxides (to form beta-hydroxy esters) comprise (a) an N-contg. cpd. contg. an amino and/or ammonium gp. and (b) a Cr halide, acetylacetonate or oxide (pref. CrCl3). Combinations of (a) and (b) give higher reaction rates and yields than either component alone.
