1528108 Reducing wind resistance in vehicles MASCHINTENFABRIK AUGSBERG-NURNBERG AG 23 Aug 1976 [21 Aug 1975] 35014/76 Heading B7B A truck has fairing side panels depending from the vehicle platform for reducing air resistance during travel. As shown in Fig. 2 the lower edge 4 of superstructure 5 is situated above the wheels and fairing panels 1 are hinged to the lower edge of the superstructure 5 to swing upwardly and outwardly. In their lower positions the panels are held against resilient buffer stops 6 on supports 7 by clamps 18. The panels 1, which are preferably made from light metal or glass fibre reinforced resin, have strengthening ribs and sound absorbing material, such as glass or mineral wool, on their inner surfaces. A collision tube 12 may be fixed along the lower edge of the panels or alternatively, the tube may be mounted on the struts 14 or support arm 7. A rubber strip (13), Fig. 3 (not shown), may be detachably secured along the lower edge of the panel. In addition to the fairing panels a deflector plate (16), Fig. 1 (not shown), may be provided at the front lower edge of the drivers cab. In a modification, Fig. 4, upper panel member 10, and the vehicle wall 25 are pivoted to the lower edge 4 about a common pivot axis 8. The panel members 10, 20 are pivotally connected by hinges 21. A closure device 23 provided on member 20 co-operates with an abutment 26 on support arm 7 to maintain the panel in its lowered position. A gas pressure spring 28 is pivotally connected between the panel and support arm 7 so that the panel is held both in the raised and lowered positions by the spring force. |
