PREPARATION OF METHYL CHLORIDE

PURPOSE:To produce CH3Cl which is a raw material of CHCl3, etc., in high yield, and to improve the life of catalyst, by the vapor phase reaction of HCl and CH3OH using Al2O3 catalyst containing specific amount of Fe. CONSTITUTION:CH3Cl is produced by the vapor phase reaction of Cl2-containing HCl and CH3OH in the presence of a catalyst under conditions where the formation of carbon is suppressed and the life of the catalyst is prolonged, by using, as the catalyst, Al2O3 having Fe content of less than 0.5 wt.% (reduced to Fe2O3). Addition of 0.1-3 wt.% of an alkali or alkaline earth metal oxide to the catalyst further improves the life of the catalyst.
