The fastner for a bag or purse includes a base plate which on its inner surface has reinforcement and holder projections arranged in lines. The projections are matched with reinforcement grooves consisting of points or teeth and/or reinforcement grooves consisting of sharp edges. A spiral steel spring wedges the cord in position to close the bag or purse. The distance between the adjacent coils of the spiral spring when there is no cord wedged in it, is between 1/3 and 2/3 of the diameter of the cord. The reinforcement and holding projections extend in a V formation towards the outside of notches in the base plate.
