The extractor facilitates the removal of a multi-sprocket "free" chain wheel (2), comprising an internally threaded retaining ring (5) mounted rotatably on the front of a sleeve (1) with a hexagonal barrel (1'). Opposed end flanges (13) and a circlip (6) maintain axial location, the sleeve flange having lugs (14) which lock into notches (2') or grooves on the core of the chain wheel. Initially, the outer sprocket of the chain wheel is removed and the ring screwed onto the bearing-retainer (4). The notches are then engaged by the lugs through an axial advancing of the sleeve, a spanner finally being applied to the latter once the ring is screwed home.
