A sealed joint including a shaft (24) and an element (10, 12) having a bore (22) slidably and rotatably receiving the shaft (24). A packing box (60) surrounds the shaft (24) and packing (66) is disposed within the box (60). A packing gland (70) is disposed about the shaft (24) and is removably secured to the packing box (60) for compressing the packing (66) to cause the packing (66) to sealingly engage the shaft (24) and the packing box (60). A resilient, elastomeric seal (80) interconnects the packing box (60) and the element (10, 12) and sealingly engages the packing box (60) and the element (10, 12). The joint remains sealed even in the case of large shaft (24) deflection since the packing box (60) and packing (66) contained therein may shift through such deflection due to the resilience of the elastomeric seal (80).
