PURPOSE:To obtain high recording density by providing a main magnetic pole composed of a high magnetic permeability magnetic film and an auxiliary magnetic pole composed of a high magnetic permeability magnetic material. CONSTITUTION:A main magnetic pole 23 composed of a high magnetic permeability magnetic film is formed on one side of a magnetoresistance element 21 with an insulation film 22 in-between and a magnetic tape 24 is run in such a manner that its tape magnetic layer 25 makes contact or approaches to the end part of these laminated films. An auxiliary magnetic pole 26 composed of a high magnetic permeability magnetic material is disposed in the position opposing to the end part of the main magnetic pole 23 and a coil 27 is wound to this auxiliary magnetic pole 26. If a constant DC current 1 is flown to the magnetoresistance element 21 and its resistance change is detected as a voltage change, reproduction output is obtained.
