The inside of the bag is automatically illuminated by the three-way switch. A lever is fitted near its point of rotation with resilient contact strip whose free end can be selectively swivelled beneath a second resilient contact strip and as the handbag is closed is pressed away by a pin which is guided outwards through the handle. A swing lever is provided which has angled outwardly projecting ends of which the thickened end is swivelled inwards when the slide fastener is opened so as to press the second contact strip against the first. As the slide fastener is closed the other end is swivelled inwards and again releases the second contact lever.
