The circuit serves for the running operation, the pure useful braking operation, the pure resistance brake operation and the combination of the latter two operations on two three-phase AC machines (M1, M2), which occasionally also operate as generators. The machines are connected to a three-phase collector rail (P) an in turn to a static (W) operating during running operation as pulse converter. The DC-side output of the static (W) is connected to a DC intermediate circuit (Z) the voltage (E) of which is kept constant by a voltage regulator over the entire duration of the type of operation in hand. The intermediate circuit capacitor (K) takes care of the smoothing of the intermediate voltage.
