The reduction gearbox is for use between a motor shaft and the driving sprocket of an endless chain with cutters used in surgery, the instrument having a handle with motor and a cutting portion. A driving pinion (16) fits on the motor shaft (14) and meshes with a gear (26) on a shaft (24) at right angles to the motor shaft. The gear is supported in bearings in a trough-shaped housing (28), solidly secured to the handle (11) and closed by a cover (29). The stub end of the gear shaft protrudes through the cover, the outside surface of the latter round the shaft forming a supporting face for the cutting portion.
