The hollow cylindrical workpiece held in a chuck (1) has the drill slide (5) moved along its interior on a threaded spindle (8) mounted in or on the spindle sleeve (3). This sleeve has a rectangular or square cross-section and a groove for the threaded spindle. The drill slide has a recess (11) in which can engage a catch (12) on the sleeve mounting block (4) which can be e.g. a headstock. The spindle sleeve passes through the centre of the workpiece and onto the centering tip (13) of the machine main spindle. This avoids deflection of the spindle sleeve.
