The recorder records and reproduces moving pictures on or from a tape with video tracks. It has a tape drive whose direction is reversible; at least one magnetic head is movable transversally to the tape direction, with a gap corresponding to the track width. There is a control device moving the head transversally to the tape direction, and a control device which moves the heat at each direction reversal by a specified number of track widths. The video tracks are recorded and/or read by a magnetic head (24, 40) whose gap (26, 42) is at an angle to the tape direction of movement, with opposite inclination angles in adjacent tracks.
