Halogenated poly-benzylene derivs. - useful as flameproofing agents for thermoplastics, e.g. polyamide, polyester, polystyrene and polyolefin

Halogenated poly(benzylene)derivs. of formula (I) are new (where X is Cl or Br; R is 1-4C alkyl; A is CH2Cl, CH2Br or CH2OH; a = 1-4; b = 0-3; a+b = 1-4; n = 3-1000). Pref. cpds. have X is Br; R is CH3; a=1-3; b=1-3; n=5-500. (I) are made by oligomerisation of an Rb-substd. benzyl halide (II) with a Friedel-Crafts. catalyst, pref. in satd. halohydrocarbon solvent, then treatment with X2. (I) are flame-proofing agents for thermoplastic polymers, esp. polyamides, linear polyesters, styrene polymers and polyolefins. (I) are compatible with thermoplastics having no effect no their mechanical properties, and unlike known oligomeric flame retardants are simple to prepare.
