The unit to measure the thickness or surface density of sheet material, in textile/paper/film mfr., uses a contactless process with radioactive rays. The radiation source and the radiation detector are located between the poles of a magnetic unit. The magnetic unit has two pole sections, with one incorporating the radiation source and the other the radiation detector. The radiation source section of the magnetic unit has pole shoes which can be adjusted to alter the gap between them. The radiation detector pole section of the magnetic unit is stretched out in the direction of the dispersion of the radiation particles. The sample testing device is simple end cheap, giving high stability and a long useful life.
