The device has a piston in a cylinder, with a piston rod protruding through the sealing cap, for varying the cross-section of a fluid passage in movement slowing mechanisms. The piston (19) is seated on a thread (18) on the rod (16). The rod has a rear end axial hole (23), and a transverse hole (26) covered by an adjustable control edge unit (27) on the piston. The piston is subject to rod-supporting spring (20) action. The piston and cap (13) have annular collars (31, 28) with end serrations, (29, 30) engaging each other when the piston is outside dead centre.
