<p>PURPOSE:To provide an adsorbent which is basically in the form of fibers obtd. by subjecting acrylonitrile type fibers to oxidation and activation, and can efficiently remove SOx in exhaust gas or the air by contact. CONSTITUTION:Fibers made from polymer or copolymer contg. more than 50% of acrylonitrile are oxidized in an oxidizing atmosphere of 200-300 deg.C to form flame resistant fibers. The fibers are then activated with a usual activating medium such as CO2 or steam at 700-1000 deg.C for 10 min-2 hr. The nitrogen content of the resulting adsorbent is 4-15%, the surface area usually 400-800 m<2>/g, and the basic group content above 180 mg/g. Since the basic form of the adsorbent is fibrous, very high adsorption speed is attained compared to conventional activated carbon and hence the adsorbent is effectively used to remove dil. SOx.</p> |
