<p>A dispatch indicator is disclosed for a vehicle or other merchandise-enclosing container to provide shipping instructions therefor. The indicator includes a horizontal shaft having a control knob for rotation and also limited axial sliding movement of the shaft, and a relatively large diameter circular rear dial plate and a relatively small diameter circular front dial plate coaxial with the shaft and having centrally disposed openings through which the shaft loosely projects, the rear dial plate presenting indicia sectors which are visible through a first viewing opening in a housing of the indicator, and the front dial plate presenting indicia sectors which are visible through a second viewing opening in the housing. The front and rear dial plates are yieldingly biased apart against a fixed front reaction plate and a fixed rear plate, respectively, each dial plate being centrally formed with radially extending clutch recesses with which a clutch finger mounted on the shaft is selectively cooperable depending upon the axial position of the shaft, with the shaft being yieldingly biased to a medial position in which the clutch finger is out of effective engagement with the dial plates. A circular row of detent depressions and a series of fixed cooperating detent protuberances effective between each dial plate and its associated fixed reaction plate restrains rotational movement of such plate when an indicia sector thereon is in register with its associated viewing opening.</p> |
