FRICTION MATERIAL LAND CONFIGURATION A plate is disclosed for frictional engagement with a generally flat reaction member. The plate includes a metallic disc with an elastomeric material affixed to the side of the disc, the elastomeric material being formed into a plurality of upraised arcuate lands generally concentric with the disc and a plurality of corresponding arcuate grooves separating adjacent lands. A ratio, R, of the width of a respective land to the sum of the width of said respective land plus the width of a respective corresponding groove (a respective lead) is defined by an equation which is a function of the pressure applied to engage the disc with the reaction member, the variation in thickness of the reaction member, the spring rate constant of the elastomer and the fraction of the peak strain which develops in the elastomer during engagement of the disc with the reaction member to the minimum strain at which failure of the elastomeric material initiates.
|
