The web (2) wound on a supply reel can be wound with varying tightness, viewed across the web width, so that variable longitudinal stresses in the wound web can have a disturbing effect. The web (2) can warp and part webs which are intended to lie on one another and have resulted from longitudinal severing of the web can gape apart and, by folding over or wrinkling, disturb further processing. The variable stresses in the web are eliminated by equalising the stress across the web width of the wound web. To this end, at the points on the web width where the lower stresses predominate, the stresses are increased to one level by web displacement (path elongation). This is achieved by means of a breaking edge (4, 5) which is pressed against the web (2) thus displacing it and bears in a sliding or rolling manner against the web at least over partial regions of the web width. The infeed of the breaking edge (4, 5) to the web is expediently designed so as to be empirically adjustable (11, 12, 6). <IMAGE>
