The appts. consists of a vertical body which is divided into sections by perforated plates. Heat exchange tubes fixed to the perforated plates occupy the central section. Contact tubes fitted with extensions which ensure the distribution of the mixt. in the tubes occupy the peripheral section. The mixt. is made to flow upwards through the central tubes. Any vapour is removed at the top and the liq. is made to flow in a thin film down the inside of the outer pipes. The arrangement of the appts. allows a simultaneous displacement of the liq. and vapour. The rate of prodn. per unit of work surface of the appts. is increased by a factor of 3.5-4. The productivity of the appts. is improved by a factor of 8-10 compared to others e.g. Castner distn. plant. The oil quality is improved by reducing the contact time of the oil-solven mixt. with the hot tubes surfaces.
