The cam follower for operating IC engine valves has a cylindrical shaft (5) free to slide in a guide. Its head (6) is rectangular, with longer side length equal to the dia. of an equivalent circular head, and the shorter side length slightly exceeding cam nose (4) width. Rotation is prevented by a set bolt (8) in an axial groove (9) in the shaft. Alternatively, the contact face (7) is sloped upwards in the direction of rotation or an axial locking strip with tabs projecting between adjacent followers may be fitted.
