A press, e.g. for crimping electrical connectors to conductors, comprises a ram driven through a working stroke to compress a workpiece and means for applying thrust to the ram through motion take-up means during the stroke incrementally to compress the workpiece by repeatedly increasing and reducing the force applied thereto. The press comprises a bed 8 and columns 6, 7 mounted on a base 2, a motor support plate 20 and supports 16. A connecting rod 42 is connected at one end to an eccentric shaft 26, journalled in the column 6, to which is attached a pulley 30 belt driven by an electric motor-driven wheel 34 and the opposite end is rigidly connected by a screw 45 to a pin 44, extending through a clearance opening in a cross-member 10, and journalled in levers 48. An oscillatable shaft 54 parallel to the pin 44 and which is journalled to the member 10 is clamped at each end to the levers 48. A pair of rods 56 are rotatably mounted in the shaft 54 equidistant from the shaft axis. A central recess 58 in the shaft exposes portions of the rods which are engaged by a pair of thrust blocks 60 extending through an opening in the member 10 and located therein by clearance pins 64. A tool-holder 79 is pivotally supported by pins 86 on a pair of arms 94 which are pinned on a shaft 100 in the supports 16 and comprises an inclined floor portion 90, a crimping die 82 and shear blade 84 and is slidable within a housing unit 66 having complementary slide ways 78, an anvil 81 and a fixed shear bar 166 located on an extension 164 of the anvil. A link 102 fixedly mounted at one end of the shaft 100 is connected by a pin 104 to a solenoid plunger 106 and serves to actuate a switch 103. A pair of tapered wedges 110 are biased into engagement with the ram 80 and thrust blocks 60 by springs 146 on rods 118 which extend rearwards therefrom through blocks 120, 122, 148 and to the ends of which are attached a switch operating contact plate 125. The wedges are slidably located in the housing 72 by pins 116 therein engaging slots in the wedges. A rod 128 attached to a pin 126 rotatably mounted in the block 122 is connected at its opposite end to a block 130 pivotally connected to a pair of arms 132, the lower ends of which are pivoted to a block 136 by a shaft 134 which is also pivotally attached to a clevis or a solenoid plunger 140. A lever 150 is connected by a lost motion connection to the block 148, pivoted intermediately to a bracket 154 and pivotally connected to a link 158, the other end of which is pivotally connected to the pin 104. A strip of U-shaped connectors are intermittently advanced to the anvil by a feed mechanism as described in Specification 944,470 which comprises a reciprocable slide 184 mounted on a block 168 below which is attached a channelled cover-plate 170 along which the connectors are advanced. The slide is controlled via a spring- loaded rod 188, passing through a lug extension 186 thereon, coupled by a lost motion connection to a feed lever 196 pivoted on a bracket 200 and connected intermediately to the pin 104. A feed finger 210 pivoted on the underside of the slide engages and advances the strip and is then cammed back therealong to slightly withdraw the strip against a resilient depending finger 182 to accurately position the leading connector on the anvil. In operation a wire W is positioned in the leading connector of the strip T, a foot switch depressed to energize a relay coil 224 which closes a switch 221 so that the coil remains energized until both switches 127 are opened and a switch 221 operated to energize the solenoid 108 to move the plunger 106 which causes lever 102 and arms 94 to rotate in an anticlockwise direction to depress the ram 80 and allow the wedges 110 to slide between it and the blocks 60. The lever 150 is also rotated in an anticlockwise direction to move the block 148 and compress the springs which urge the wedges between the ram and blocks and the lever 196 rotated clockwise to move the slide 184 rearwards so that one of the connectors abuts the stop finger 182. Since the motor is running the oscillating connecting rod 42 causes oscillation of the shaft 54 through the levers 48. The ram 80 is moved through its working stroke by the shaft 54 alternately and repetitively thrusting against the blocks 60 whilst the wedges 10 alternately move inwardly to act as motion take-up members until the crimping is completed and the assembled connector is sheared from the strip at which point the plate 125 operates the switches 127 to stop the motor. The solenoid 142 is subsequently energized to withdraw the wedges 110 via arms 132 and blocks 122, 130, compression of the springs 146 thereby causing the block 148 to effect resetting of the linkage 150 and pin 104 and the lever 196 which advances the slide184 to effect the feeding of the next connector of the strip on to the anvil. The depth of engagement of the wedge is limited by the position of the cut-off switches 127 which are adjustably mounted relative to the plates 125.
