Electrodynamic stirring of molten core of continuous cast slab - by superimposing direct electric current onto magnetic field

The semisolid slab travels through a row of metal guide and support rolls outside the mould. At least one coil is wound round the slab and the rolls to create a magnetic field, while an electric current is fed through the slab at 90 degrees the field (a). For feeding the current into and/or out of the slab, the metal rolls are pref. employed as contacts; and both a direct field and direct current are pref. employed. The molten core of the slab can be stirred without disturbing the conventional layout of the metal guide and support rolls. The stirring prevents the segregation of nonmetalic impurities in the molten core.
