A back rest attachment 1 of a hinge for angularly adjustable vehicle seats is unlocked for adjustment from the position shown by raising a lever 14 on the seat attachment 3 against a spring 15, thereby clearing a flexible locking belt 7 of trapezoidal cross-section from frictional engagement with the internal surfaces of a trapezium shaped peripheral groove in a disc 2 coaxial with the hinge pivot 4 and secured to the seat attachment 1. The belt terminates in upper and lower eyelets 8, 9, the former being secured by a pin 10 to the seat attachment 3, to which the lever 14 is connected by a pin 13, while eyelet 9 is secured to an extension 12 of the lever by a pin 11. Movement of the back rest rearwardly is resisted when the lever 14 is in the locked position, though the back rest may be tilted forwardly without raising the lever. Various modifications of the way in which the belt 7 may be locked are disclosed. In Figs. 4-6 (not shown) the ends of the belt are connected to the lever by a spring assisted and pivoting slide, while in Figs. 7-9 (not shown), the lower part of the belt is made longer than the upper part and is stretched in the locked position over a tightening pivot arm (212) (Fig. 7) connected to the lever. In Figs. 10, 11 (not shown) a yoke (335) slides over the ends of the belt, the lower end of which is stretched over a pivoted extension arm (312) (Fig. 10) of the lever, while in Figs. 12-16 (not shown) the width of the yoke (435) is adjustable. In every embodiment a spiral spring 6 between the seat attachment 1 and the pivot 4 urges said attachment forwardly, the tension spring 15 being sufficient to resist such forward motion. The flexible belt 7 may be strengthened by longitudinally running peripheral steel wires or may be glued or moulded to an outer steel band; alternatively it may have a flexible core encased by inner and outer integral steel bands, Figs. 17, 18 (not shown), while in Figs. 19, 20 (not shown) the belt is a flexible steel band having rubber strips on the inclined surfaces thereof. Finally the band may be a circular wire. Hinge fittings on both sides of the seat may have a common pivot axis with which is coaxial an enclosing rod or pipe. One hinge fitting only has the locking device. |
