The advancing mechanism is for a movable hydraulic roof support as used in mining etc, particularly of the shield type or formed by piles. Two or more elastic guide bars are joined at the forward end by a head, and are guided at the rear end by a slide working in guides in the bedplate. A hydraulic advance ram hinges between bars and bedplate. The bars (19) have bent portions towards the opposite sides, and which form straightening members for the bedplate sections. Mating portions (31) can be provided on the bedplate sections.
