Compact nitro:guanidine prodn. with high bulk density - prepd. by adding hot soln. to cold non-solvent useful as explosive and propellant

Prodn. of compact nitroguanidine (I) of high bulk density comprises first making a hot soln. of (I) in a polyvalent, lower aliphatic alcohol (its mono or dialkyl ether), DMF and/or DMSO. This soln. is then poured into a second solvent (A) and the mixt. stirred and cooled. (A) is miscible with the first solvent but will not (or only slightly) dissolve (I). Suitable (A) are lower aliphatic alcohols, acetone, CCl4, dioxan, THF and/or benzene. The hot soln., which may additionally contain water, is pref. at 80-120 degrees C. (I) is a propellant and explosive. The prod. has good flow properties so is easily processed.
